Gordon Henderson was born in the Medway Towns and is proud to be a true “Man of Kent”. He grew up on a council estate and attended local state schools until he was 16 when he left school to work for Woolworths as a stockroom assistant in Chatham. He stayed with “Woolies” for 15 years and was a senior store manager by the time he decided to move on in 1979.

On leaving Woolworths, Gordon did a variety of jobs, including running his own restaurant in South Africa, being a senior contracts officer for GEC Marconi (in Rochester), a director of the Unwins Wine Group and Operations Manager for the largest independent gift wholesalers in the UK.

Gordon is married to Louise, with three children and seven grandchildren – all girls! He has lived on the Isle of Sheppey for over 30 years and considers himself an adopted “Swampie”.

For relaxation Gordon likes to write (his first volume of short stories, Pigeon Pie, has been published and he has three novels in the pipeline). He loves music (his taste is varied which includes: Bach, Beethoven, Beach Boys and the Beatles!) and cooking (his “Steak Winston Churchill” is to die for!).

Gordon is also a long standing supporter of Gillingham FC and Partick Thistle FC.

Gordon’s Experience

Gordon has a long-standing interest in politics. He is a fully qualified Conservative Party political agent and at one time was the constituency agent for Thanet North MP, Roger Gale.

Gordon has held a number of elected posts in local government. He was twice deputy leader of Swale Borough Council and was also a Kent County Councillor, during which time he sat both on the Education Committee and the Kent Police Authority. He has retained a keen interest in education and Law and Order.

Gordon Henderson has been politically active in our local community for many years.

Gordon first stood for election as Member of Parliament for Sittingbourne and Sheppey in 2005 when he lost to the Labour Party by just 79 votes. He stood again in 2010 and his hard work in the community over many years was rewarded when he won with a 12,383 majority.

Gordon's majority slightly decreased in 2015 to 12,168, however, it increased again in 2017 to 15,211 and most recently in December 2019, his majority went up to 24,479.

Gordon has been involved also in local voluntary work, including as an instructor in the Army Cadet Force, as a director of the SWIM training centre (Sittingbourne) and as a school governor at Eastchurch Primary School (Sheppey) and the Cheyne Middle School (Sheppey).

Gordon was a director of the Swale Community Action Project, one of the objectives of which was to campaign for a cleaner, greener Swale. This subsequently became Litter Angels which involves local youngsters designing an anti-litter poster or writing a poem about litter.
